To be a great presenter, you have to get 3 things right…

Story, Slides, & Delivery.

If you miss one, your presentation won’t have the impact that it deserves. And yes, I’m also talking about your weekly meetings.

It might surprise you, but even for me, opening PowerPoint is never the first thing I do.

Let me break this down.

Every great presentation starts with the story. This is your pre-work where you think hard about your message. When I talk about story, I don’t mean the “once upon a time” narratives, I’m talking about actual business storytelling.

The one where we know exactly

• Who our audience is & what they want/need to hear.
• What the goal of our presentation (e.g. informing, persuading, inspiring,…)
• What the key message is that the audience should remember

Based on that you can find the perfect structure for your presentation (e.g. Problem-Solution ; Overview-Details ; Beginning-Middle-End).

Once that story has taken shape you can move on to the slides.

This is where you

• Simplify to one idea per slide. If it doesn’t support the key message, skip it!
• Design your slides with CRAP in mind 🙂 (The design principles that is).
• Visualise your data so it actually speaks to the audience.
• Bonus: if you make lots of slides, understand the systems to speed up your workflow

This gives you a clear (this is the keyword!) presentation. Not a flashy one… Just a clear, professional one that doesn’t take hours to prepare.

Then it’s time for the finale, the delivery. Even if you do step 1 and 2 right, if you fail to deliver with impact, it won’t matter.

• Focus on your timing (with animations & transitions)
• Use your voice to its full potential (pacing, tone, pauses,…)
• Rehearse, not just once, but many times in different scenarios (with slide, without slides, while sitting/standing/walking/…). This will give you the confidence you need.

If you manage to get these 3 steps right (Story, Slides & Delivery) you’ll give a presentation that actually has an impact on people.
